The problem

Nacel Australasia, a provider of student exchange programs, faced a growing challenge: an increasing number of parental inquiries regarding their child's trip details and concerns about their whereabouts during the exchange period. To address this, the proposed solution was to develop an app where trip details could be stored and updated, accompanied by a location tracking feature. However, upon joining the project, I recognised an opportunity to enhance the app's functionality to better serve the needs of both students and parents. I suggested incorporating additional features such as photo uploads and note-taking capabilities, enriching the app's user experience and making it more meaningful for students.

Daily check-in

A location tracking app for peace of mind

The primary function of the app was to log the students location at regular intervals and ask the students to tap check-in once a day. Parents could see this information using a different view of the app for peace of mind.

Onboarding

Onboarding new students

Parents and students receive login details via email from the program and are each onboarded with details specific to what they'll use the app for.

Student check-ins

Different ways to share your location & memories

Students would be prompted on first use to try checking in so they could discover how to use the app. They could add a simple tap to check-in or add messages and photos for more meaningful content. There would be daily notifications to add a check-in and alerts to hosts and parents if these were missed.

Parent's view

Keeping an eye on your kids from afar

The parent's view of the app would show a feed of check-ins, messages and photos from one or more of their kids who were away on exchange. Clicking a post would allow them to see the location details.

trip details

Trip details and contacts all in one spot

To reduce ongoing enquiries to customer service we included an information area that would be populated by Nacel with all the details and information parents, students and hosts would need for the trip. The information shown would be specific to the users needs, for example parents would see their child's itinerary and hosts contact details.
